Dr. Steven Ayer’s research in construction safety and technology is defining new strategies that companies can leverage to reduce Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs). His keynote will cover emerging strategies for identifying sources of energy that cause hazards, assessing and prioritizing which hazards are likely to cause SIFs, defining controls for preventing the harmful transfer of energy to workers, and introducing techniques including High Energy Control Assessment (HECA), to apply energy-based fundamentals.
The keynote dinner is a rare opportunity for owners, executives, senior operational leaders, industry associations and safety professionals to learn directly from an expert in this emerging work. Attendees will engage in meaningful discussion with peers from across Saskatchewan’s construction community, contribute to shaping the future of serious injury prevention and gain practical knowledge to inform action on their sites.

In this two-hour session, Dr. Ayer will work with a small group of safety professionals and auditors to explore energy-based safety concepts and High Energy Control Assessment (HECA). Participants will be refreshed on fundamental energy-based safety concepts but will also gain exposure to performing HECA assessments for real jobsites.
The process will help participants define strategies to improve construction workflows by adding direct and alternative controls that may have been previously missing. This practical workshop will equip participants with the experience needed to begin applying HECA in their own organizations.

Dr. Ayer is an associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and an award-winning educator in construction safety and management. He teaches the principles of energy-based safety and researches how emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality can strengthen safety learning and improve the control of hazardous energy.
Steve’s work with the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA) and his extensive background in engineering education informs how he presents critically important safety topics for the construction industry. He combines innovation with real-world application to focus on serious injury and fatality (SIF) prevention strategies.
